Our Story

The Idea Behind Luchetti (Loo-KE-tee)

Luchetti began with two frustrations.

As an artist, I have drawn in many sketchbooks over the years, mostly with pencil and pen. And I never liked the gutter. Even sketchbooks labeled “lay flat” still interrupted the page. When I wanted to draw across a spread, the gutter always broke the flow. You could use one side comfortably, or you could use both, but not truly together. It always felt like a compromise.

The second frustration came from observing watercolor sketchbooks.
At the time I was working closely with artists reproducing paintings onto canvas and paper. Watercolor pieces created in sketchbooks were often the most difficult to scan and reproduce accurately because of buckling pages and the gutter.

I would see completed books where the pages were heavily buckled from saturation. Artists often had to paint on one side only, or begin the next page already fighting distortion. The surface was working against the medium.

That never made sense to me. The core structure of most sketchbooks still reflects centuries-old binding methods, durable, yes, but not designed for uninterrupted artistic flow.

With a background in bookbinding, fine art printing, and product development, I knew there had to be a better way to build it.

So I began prototyping.

Eighteen months and countless iterations later, Luchetti was born.

What We Focused On

The goal was simple: remove the compromises that had quietly become normal.

  • True Flat™ zero-gutter construction designed to open completely flat
  • 100% cotton, 600 gsm paper engineered to resist buckling under heavy saturation
  • UltraBond™ structural reinforcement built for long-term durability
  • A consistent, predictable texture across every spread

The result is a patent-pending true flat sketchbook that stays open from edge to edge, allowing ideas to move freely across the entire page.

The intention was never to make something flashy. It was to create a sketchbook that disappears beneath the work.

Our Name & Inspiration

We chose the name Luchetti in honor of our great-grandfather Michele Luchetti who was born in Fabriano, Italy, long regarded as one of the birthplaces of European fine art paper. That legacy set a standard for craftsmanship and respect for materials, a standard we strive to honor in every Luchetti sketchbook.

A Focus on What Matters

At Luchetti, we focus on materials, engineering, and the artist’s experience.

We listen closely to the artists who use our sketchbooks. Their feedback shapes our refinements. Their work informs our decisions.

Luchetti was built to support the creative process, not interrupt it.

See Luchetti in Action

We regularly share behind-the-scenes clips of artists testing the sketchbook with everything from heavy washes to markers and mixed media.
